Stop! Before you throw away that soda can or buy that next textbook, take a second to think about how it affects the environment. There are simple things every student can do to help our mother Earth right here on campus. But the first the thing to remember is not to take on too much; the key is to take small steps that can make a big difference.
Books: Buying used textbooks not only are they cheaper, but it is also a great way to recycle. Check the paper content of the new books you do purchase. If the publisher doesn't use environmentally-friendly paper, find out why not.
Writing: As students, we spend most of our class time taking notes using notebook paper. Before you buy your supplies, take a look at the post-consumer content - even some pencils are made from sustainable forests.
Water: Step away from the vending machines. Save money and plastic by bringing your own sports bottle with water. Only about 12 percent of plastic bottles are actually recycled.
Computers: Turn off your computer when you aren't using it. I know it seems like a burden to re-start your computer, but think of how much energy it saves. If your computer lab keeps their systems on non-stop, you should speak up.
Recycle: Simple and true, the easiest and most effective way to help is to actually recycle. Our campus has many recycling bins and even the "Valley Star" gets recycled. So, get to know where those cute recycling logos are.
