Preparations for Graduation

Fall graduates and spring candidates are scheduled to graduate June 10 at 4 p.m. in Monarch stadium. Preparations begin today at Gradfest 2003 in Monarch Hall from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

"Some of the students seem really excited, others don't really care," said Valley college graduate and graduation evaluation technician, Martha Rios. "They just want to complete their studies,"

Graduates will receive mock diplomas at the ceremonies. Fall graduates have already received their diplomas and spring candidates who pass all their required classes will get theirs in the mail afterwards.

"There are students that will graduate based on the grades that get posted in June," said Yasmin Delahoussaye, vice president of student services. "You could have a student who blows a final. And then you have the ceremonies the next day and they're marching, and you give them a diploma - you wouldn't want to have to take that diploma back."

Students who don't pass the classes they need to fulfill graduation requirements can take them in the summer and, if they become eligible, they may still receive their diplomas before the fall.

"I'm a little nervous," graduation candidate David Guzzardi said. "I need to pass my math class,"

The graduation office mailed students' graduation packages during the last two weeks. Graduating candidates who haven't received their packages can pick them up in the graduation office. More than 100 prospective graduates who neglected to petition for graduation before the deadline will be allowed to participate but won't see their names in the commencement book.

"This is just the beginning of the end," Delahoussaye said. "I'm hoping that most of them will not end their education with an associate's degree, but will go on to four-year colleges and obtain higher degrees, which are so critical in the work place today."

Student auditions to sing the national anthem at commencement are scheduled today in the music department. Auditions for commencement speakers are also scheduled today at 1:30 p.m. in the speech department faculty offices.

"I'm excited - I'm ready to move on," Associated Student Union Parliamentarian Jessica Salazar said.
