Prop. 8 Provokes Protests Across California

Thousands of protestors united in Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento and other California cities over the weekend to oppose the Nov. 4 passage of Proposition 8. More than 2,000 people marched through the streets of Long Beach on Friday. According to the Los Angeles Times, 15 people were arrested, most for refusing to disperse.

Mitch Mitchell, drummer and last surviving member of the Jimi Hendrix Experience and one of the most influential rock and roll drummers of the 1960's, was found dead in his Portland, Oregon hotel room Wednesday. He was 61. Mitchell had just finished a nation wide tour with the Experience Hendrix Tour 2008 and was planning a short vacation in Portland, before returning to London.

Valley College started their final home game of the season slowly and ended the first half badly on their way to a 5-2 loss at the feet of the Santa Monica College Corsairs. "We came out pretty flat," said Valley head coach Shane Watkins. "If we had come out in the first half like we did in the second, who knows, maybe the mistakes don't happen.

Math Grant Adds Up For Valley

Valley College has been awarded a Congressionaly Directed Grant from the U.S. Department of Education worth $191,593 that will be used to establish a "Solving the Math Achievement Gap" program in a department that has seen its success fall recently. "Student performance has been getting worse and worse over the years," said Teresa Sutcliffe, the grant's program director.

Election night proved unforgettable as we selected the first African American president. It is a huge step for the country, and celebrations were called for. But by wallowing in hatred for the Republican Party, many Democrats did nothing but embarrass and let down a campaign that should have ended gracefully.

At first glance it doesn't seem like much. There are a couple of portraits on thinly stretched canvas, loosely pasted clippings of random pictures, giant pseudo- comic strips and a couple of unorthodox sculptures. The music that is not really music, but rather a collection of sounds sets the scene along with the soft yellow lighting.

Streak Ended by Santa Barbara

The Monarchs' five game winning streak came to an end Saturday night, which saw the hometown team Santa Barbara hold on to a 55-52 victory, despite a 28 point fourth quarter rally by Valley College. "There were many plays that could be pointed to as the reason for the loss," said quarterback Bret Visciglia.
