Valley College is set to give the athletic department a facelift. The price tag: 10 million dollars.
Athletic Director Chuck Ferrerro explained that the campus will go through a two-part construction process that is set to begin in the spring of 2005.
"It is going to be a lot of planning, work by the [campus renovation] committees, as well as many meetings to get the work done," Ferrerro said.
Starting with the swimming pool, construction is set for new 50 and 25-meter pools (50 meters is Olympic regulation length), and a sunken Jacuzzi tank is set to be built alongside a 7000 square foot DSPS handicap facility.
The north and south gyms are in the planning phase for new paint jobs and modernization of equipment and facilities.
"The facilities have a lot of tradition... a lot of history. But, renovations are greatly needed if we are to compete with other schools," said women's basketball head coach Mike Muro.
In the second phase, set to start mid 2006, work will begin on the athletic field. The current dirt track will be replaced with a world-class Mondo track to allow for track meets on campus. A new field house will be added near the west side of Monarch Stadium with new lockers and facilities for football, women's soccer, track, and baseball. Plans for new tennis courts are in the works and a track will be added around the football practice field; and Monarch Stadium will be expanded to make it soccer legal, causing a new grandstand to be built.
Ferrerro explained that the second phase of work is in the architectural stages.
