The draft has always been a bad idea in a country that considers itself free. A spirit of voluntary cooperation has always been a part of the American way.

Our all-volunteer army has served us well since the end of the Vietnam War, at least until President George W. Bush sent us on the fool's errand that was "liberating" Iraq.

Furthermore, the calls from Congresspeople like Wrangel, Hollings and Berman for universal service for people 18-26 are dead wrong.

I am all for adding even more positive incentives for military and other forms of public service.

Should we guarantee citizenship to those immigrants who voluntarily put themselves in harm's way for this country? Absolutely.

Should we beef up the GI Bill to provide even more money for college after public service? Positively.

Should we provide student loan forgiveness for those who volunteer for public service after college? Unquestionably.

The government should have no right to "volunteer" its citizenry against their will for any sort of service. That's slavery. And that's wrong.

Representative Berman stands for re-election this November. Students should remember his unwholesome interest in "volunteering" us for public service when they go to vote.
