As of April 11, 2004, Dr. Tyree Wieder has been president of Valley College for 10 years. To commemorate a decade of service, the school hosted a celebration Monday (see story, page 1). Weider sat down with The Valley Star's Jacqui Brown last week to discuss her tenure so far and what she sees in Valley's future. This is an excerpt from that interview, for the complete interview go online to www.lavalleystar.com.

Aside from her commitment to Valley, Wieder, serves on the Achievement Council and sits on an advisory council at California State University Northridge. She is on the Concurrence Committee with the UC Chancellors office for the California Subject Matter Project in addition to serving on the AAA's corporate board. She is also one of the chief executive officers on the California Community College's 2003-2004 Board of Directors.

THE VALLEY STAR: Does it feel like 10 years overseeing Valley or did it go by in the blink of an eye?

TYREE WIEDER: Surprisingly enough, it does not feel like 10 years. It's gone by very quickly. This is a very busy office and there are a lot of things going on all the time so everything tends to move fast.

VS: Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?

TW: Well, 10 years is a long way off ... of course, I said that 10 years ago and look what happened. Right now I have to say that I am concentrating on Valley College for the next few years as we work through the building projects, ...what we're doing for student success and retention with the STARS project, with tutoring services, building new instructional programs and keeping our curriculum fresh and up to date. We're looking forward to our 2007 accreditation, and I think between those ... things it's enough to keep me busy.

VS: What do you think are some of the most significant changes that you've accomplished over the years?

TW: In the last 10 years we've hired a lot of new faculty and staff. We have some very strong veteran faculty and others that have retired as we've grown, but we've been able to add some excellent new faculty to complement our veterans. They're excited about what they're doing. They're energetic and they're very interested in the students and that's the bottom line. No matter what all the rest of us do, the impression that students have is dependent on what happens in the classroom day-to-day, face-to-face with the instructor. Students can go to this campus and never meet me or the other administrators. The faculty is who they interact with as well as our classified staff. I'm very pleased to bring in new faculty.
