Dr. Earleen DeVivo, longtime professor of psychology at Valley College, died of cancer April 10 at her home in Malibu. She was 74.

Dr. DeVivo taught at Valley for 33 years and was the faculty adviser to the psychology club. She missed only two days of work during her tenure.

She received her Ph.D. from UCLA in 1974 and held 13 certificates in fields ranging from family counseling to biofeedback. She was one exam away from receiving her pharmaceutical license.

She and her husband Tony DeVivo took many trips together in the 13 planes they owned throughout their 29-year marriage. After one turbulent trip at the helm, Dr. DeVivo insisted on taking flying lessons herself. She wanted to be able to fly the plane if something were to happen to him.

Mr. DeVivo recalled a trip to Nova Scotia to see the earth's highest tide at the Bay of Fundy. "We stood on a little bridge and watched the tide come in like a giant tidal wave," he said. "It was the highlight of our life."

Her husband described Dr. DeVivo as an accomplished and dedicated woman who would stay up late into the night correcting papers and often worked weekends. "She got up at 5 a.m. and sometimes wouldn't get home until midnight," he said.

Survivors in addition to her husband include two daughters, Rachel Carrol and Rhoda Barlow, and a son, David Strong.
