The Red Cross is teaming up with more than 80 other organizations for "September is National Preparedness Month" to prepare the public in case of a disaster.
Red Cross will hold several events through the month to promote preparedness with the big event being "Together We Prepare Saturday" September 18, the event, taking place at various Red Cross chapters and blood services regions, will include CPR training, preparedness fairs and presentations on readiness.
"National Preparedness Month will give everyone an opportunity to work toward a better prepared America," Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said last Wednesday in a press statement. "This broad coalition and vast number of activities and events will allow us to reach millions of individuals and inform them about ways they can prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses and schools."
September 9 will mark the official start of National Preparedness Month on Capitol Hill.
"There is a confidence that comes when you know what to do if you are told to respond during an emergency," said American Red Cross President and CEO Marty Evans on the Red Cross website.
Red Cross released a survey in July that found that only 1 in 5 Americans feel "very prepared" for a catastrophic event and about half of parents polled were familiar with the emergency evacuation plans of their child's school.
Preparedness Month is designed to remind Americans how they can serve their communities by being ready for the unexpected emergency.
