Volunteers came to Valley College looking to sign up as many voters as possible. On the first day 17 people registered and more than 75 have signed up since.

"Our goal is to register as many students as possible," said Randy Gold, who spearheads the Valley for Kerry campaign. "We're always focusing on getting students involved."

The registration is open to anyone who will be 18 before the Nov. 2 election and is an American citizen.

There are 18 volunteers on campus, two of which are Valley students and the remainder are community members.

"I think it's really important for everyone to vote because it's really the only voice we have together," said Cathy Colloff, director of the campus drive at Valley. "The Florida election shows how important every vote is; there was a very small number of votes that made the difference between Gore or Bush being president."

According to Gold, there are 30 voter registration tables around the community. There are tables at malls, farmers markets, CSUN, Pierce and Mission will soon have one.

"[We're doing] a lot more than putting voter registration tables or clipboarders on campus, [we're] making people politically aware and getting people involved," Gold said. "We're trying to educate."

"I see 18 year olds so excited to vote for their first time and even 30 year olds who have never voted before and want to make a difference," said Gold, who said he was inspired to get involved because the direction the nation is going in has made him furious.

Valley for Kerry is always looking for volunteers, according to Gold. Those interested in volunteering, duties of which range from manning the tables and signing up voters to letter writing and attending weekend rallies, can sign up at www.valleyforkerry.com.
