"It takes seven girls to win this game," said Valley head coach Eddie Barrera. "We need to come to the game as a team."
Team defense wasn't a primary focus early on, as was evident by the early open shots granted to the Gauchos. Saddleback driver Sarah Vass approached the goal, motioned right, then went left for an easy first goal 38 seconds into the game.
"It's difficult to block shots when there is no defense," said goalie Caroline Bohbot.
Despite the barrage from the Gauchos' offense, Bohbot managed seven saves in three quarters, six of which came in the first half. However, the number of shot attempts would have been limited if not for the Monarchs' poor ball handling.
Valley had six turnovers in the first five minutes, lending help to Saddleback's passing plays. Driver Kristine Palle eyed a goal with four minutes left in the quarter, but instead gave the assist off to Vass who launched a shot just below the corner post, scoring her second of three goals for the game. The Gauchos managed a 5-0 lead after one quarter.
The Monarchs tried a brief offensive pump in the second quarter. Driver Nicole Klock had a shot attempt blocked by goalie Christina Avalos two minutes into the quarter, but the ball was quickly recovered by Danielle Looymans for Valley's first goal. That was the only quarter of discernable offensive intent by the Monarchs.
The Gauchos allowed only one other Valley goal (Jennifer Turcios, 1:56), then opened up the defensive line for Kristine Palle to give Saddleback a 12-2 lead at the half.
Palle led her team in goals, tallying six for the game with four launched during the second quarter alone.
