Contest Gives Students Opportunity to Study Abroad

Three lucky students will win trips to study in France.

Studyabroad.com is teaming up with Truman State University, IPAG-School of Management and the STA Travel to award three scholarships for students to study in Nice, France during spring 2005.

"Many students say that cost is the major limiting factor to studying abroad,"said John Duncan, manager of studyabroad.com. "This sweepstakes is our way of promoting international education while making a student's dream of studying abroad come true."

AUF WIEDERSEHEN - That´s German for "good-bye." Dr. Sybille Peniche thinks that the study abroad program is a great experience for any student interested in a once-in-a-lifetime chance.



Although the study abroad scholarship is available to any student, studyabroad.com is also offering the top three victors additional scholarships to Truman University.

The grand prize winner will receive a $2,000 scholarship, the second-place winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship and the third-place winner will receive a $500 scholarship. Ten runners-up will also receive a Studyabroad.com prize pack.

Truman State ranked sixth in the nation among master's universities for the number of students studying abroad, according to Open Doors 2002.

"I would like to study in a different country, to meet different people, [experience their] culture and way of living," said Valley College student Leyla Velasco.

Nearly 50 percent of high school graduates are attending college, according to the U.S. Census. Of that number only about one percent of students study abroad.

According to "Study Away: the Unauthorized Guide to College Abroad," the benefits to studying abroad are very valuable. It can give students a global perspective that is not only good on a personal level, but can also be very impressive to future employers.

"The greatest benefit of multicultural exposure is the confidence one gets to mix freely with people without shying away," said an alumnus of the U.S. International University in Nairobi in "Study Away."

The book also states that learning a new language can be an asset. Many companies are now requiring that their employees speak a second language.
