Playing host to the College of the Canyons' Cougars, the Monarchs lost a sea-saw game to the nationally ranked Cougars 48-45 and had their record drop to a dismal 2-5.

After losing key games to Bakersfield, Moorpark and West Los Angeles, Valley looked to rebound against Canyons as the Monarchs took a 24-14 halftime lead against the No. 3 ranked team in the nation, but ended up falling short.

Despite the loss and the team's continued struggle throughout the season, the Monarchs are staying optimistic.

"It was a big game for us," said head coach Ron Ponciano. "When you play someone that good, you have to play with pride, and we did that."

Punting after their first offensive possession, the Monarchs struggled early defensively as Cougars' quarterback Cory Miles connected with running back Gerrell Cain for an 80-yard touchdown reception that gave Canyons an early 7-0 lead.

Valley quickly answered back, as wide receiver Max Parra scored on a two-yard touchdown run after running back Edric Prim gained crucial field position as Prim broke through the Cougar defense and gained 77 yards.

"Our running game really came alive tonight," said quarterback Brendon Doyle.

Doyle than hooked up with wide receiver Charles Harris on an 18-yard touchdown pass as Valley retook the lead 14-7 with 46 seconds left in the first quarter.

Kicker Christian Guardado extended Valley's 14-7 lead to 17-7 as the Monarch kicker successfully converted on a 37-yard field goal attempt.

The Cougars roared back and cut the lead to three as Miles ran it in and scored a 8-yard rushing touchdown after Miles hooked up on a 50-yard reception with receiver Chad Garrett.

Valley extended its lead 24-14 as the Monarchs drove down the field for more than five minutes as Parra scored on a three-yard pass from Doyle.

Defensive back Chris Green sealed the halftime lead as he intercepted a pass by Miles.

Canyons answered back on the first possession of the second half, as freshman receiver Devin Stearns scored on a 10-yard pass from Miles.
