Valley College students and their families came together at the Dean's reception in Monarch Hall Thursday to recognize the outstanding academic achievements of students who made the Dean's List and those who received the President's Honor Award.

More than 200 people attended the event that included the musical talents of Valley student John Jihanyan and provided appetizers of cookies, fruit punch and mini-quiches.

Both full-time and part-time students who earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher are eligible for the Dean's List. Recipients of the President's Honor Award include students on the Dean's List for three consecutive semesters. The designation Dean's List and Presidents' Honor Award is placed on student transcripts.

"It's good to be recognized for my hard work and to set a good example for my children," said child development major Doris Meels.

Students were recognized by the ASU, TAU Alpha Epsilon and the office of student services. President's Award recipients were asked to walk across the stage and receive the President's Honor pin.

Los Angeles City Councilman Dennis Zine spoke about the importance of never giving up. Zine, a Valley alumnus, has served the Los Angeles community for more than 33 years. He is also the first council member with a Middle Eastern background.

Zine explained that during his childhood, education was never as big an issue as putting food on the table. An average student in school, Zine learned the importance of education from his father.

"I'm extremely proud of my son," said Barrie Richter, mother of student Jonathan Rissman. "It hasn't been easy for him and it's nice that students are being recognized for their hard work. I'm very pleased to have come to this reception."
