The Monarch basketball team opened its 2004-05 season with a fourth-place finish at the Fullerton Classic. Valley saw its early-season record fall to 1-2 after losing 88-64 to the L.A. Southwest Cougars Saturday.

"We actually got off to a good start," said head coach Glen Hefferman. "[The team] played three ranked teams, and we put up a good fight in each game."

After opening the tournament with a convincing 90-69 win over the Pasadena Lancers, the Monarchs struggled against host Fullerton Hornets and fell 80-69 Friday night.

"The team started off slow," said freshman guard Dante Childress (16 points, 5 rebounds,7-13 shooting). "We as a team really couldn't get into our offense because the team tried to rush everything tonight."

Valley struggled as the Hornets jumped to a 20-5 lead. Fouls and costly turnovers derailed the Monarchs' offense early on.

"Well, we didn't play a lot of team defense, said freshman forward Michael Martin (16 points, 7 rebounds, 8-25 shooting). "As a team, we needed to come and work together, but for some reason we failed to do so. Our defense really hurt us."

The Monarchs struggled throughout the game as the Valley converted just 40 percent of its field goals (27-67), as Valley trailed by as much as 20 points during the game.

Refusing to go down quietly, the Monarchs chipped away at the Hornets' double-digit lead several times during the game. Valley got within nine points several times in the second half.

The Hornets maintained the lead due to the numerous fouls and turnovers that stopped any type of momentum that the Monarchs built during the second half.

"The guys on the team needed to calm down and work together on the court," said Martin. "But, we seemed to have a problem focusing on what we had to do."

"Fullerton was a better team," said Childress. "We couldn't get into our offensive because we tried to rush everything."

Even with the slow start, the Monarchs remain positive.
