A new election for the 2005-2006 ASU President will take place in Monarch Square Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
After the Election Committee decided that the top two vote-getters in April 19-20 election should be disqualified because of campaign violations, leaving the third-place finisher to become the ASU president with only 78 votes, Faculty Advisor and Acting Vice President of Student Services Sherri Rodriguez and fellow Acting Vice President of Student Services Tino Monzano insisted that the ASU hold another election to better represent the will of the student body.
Last week, half of the Election Committee (including interim President Jessie Salas) walked off the job in protest. Nevertheless, Rodriguez and Committee Chairman Ron Cabrera confirmed that the second election would be held this week and that no penalties would be assessed to returning candidates despite any rules violations in the first election.
The candidates are: Nelli Martirosan, the top vote-getter in the first election and a current member of the Executive Council, who was initially disqualified by the Election Committee because some of her supporters campaigned too close to the polling place. When asked for a statement for this election, she told The Valley Star that she did not support a second election because she felt that she had already won the first one.
The second candidate is Adam Park, who was initially appointed president by the Election Committee when Martirosyan and second-place finisher Theresa Chavez were disqualified. Park said that his qualifications include running a restaurant.
The third candidate is Olivia Njauki, who has not confirmed with the Election Committee that she wishes to remain in the race and could not be reached by for comment by The Valley Star.
Theresa Chavez, currently ASU's Fine Arts Commissioner, has dropped out of the race but has endorsed Adam Park.
