Letter: ASU - Stop the Accusations
Issue date: 5/18/05 Section: Opinion
I am a 50-year-old Valley College student who feels a lot of pain in her heart because of the accusations made in The Valley Star by students who have no idea who Levon Bagramian and Nelli Martirosyan are.
There is a huge reason why Armenians voted for these two brilliant people to become ASU presidents. I am writing this letter on behalf of many Armenians who I know at Valley.
For the past two months I've read The Valley Star and it pains me to read some students' accusations [of] Levon Bagramian being elected because he was an Armenian. Also, when ASU declares the winner for 2005-2006 year ASU president, who [I think] is going to be Nelli Martirosyan, I am sure there will be the same kind of accusations as there were about the other Armenian elected candidates for 2005-2006.
Those accusing, do they have any idea about who Levon Bagramian and Nelli Martirosyan are?
Let me tell you how I got to know them both. It was a few years ago when I turned on the TV and for the first time saw Levon Bagramian and Nelli Martirosyan representing an organization that is very active in the Armenian community. On the TV show that they were the guests of, they were encouraging [viewers] to attend a concert organized by the organization they were a part of; with the proceeds of the concert [going toward] rebuilding a school in Areguni, a border village in Armenia. [At] first, I wasn't sure if they would keep their promise. However, I went to the concert, contributed to the cause and impatiently waited for the results. After a few months, they presented a videotape of the reopening of the remodeled school.
Now, let me assure everyone that if the people I know at Valley and I didn't know how brilliant Levon Bagramian and Nelli Martirosyan were we [wouldn't have] voted for them.
Valley students must feel blessed and be thankful to both of them for trying to make a difference in our college.
