I am writing to respond to the staff editorial in the last issue. First though, for those who don't know what the Associated Student Union (ASU) is: We are a group of students elected to represent Valley College students on a local, state and national level, as well as getting students involved on campus.

Moving on, I'd like to end this debate right here.

Bagramian won last year's election because he campaigned aggressively and intelligently. Yes, he did get a lot of Armenian votes, but he also got a lot of non-Armenian votes.

I know this better than anybody - I ran against him.

Student apathy is not a new phenomenon, but it's crazy to me that students would not want to have a voice in issues that deal directly with their lives.

The students in the last issue suggested having banners, more exposure of candidates, debates and speaking to classes. Thing is, we did all of those things last year and only got about 645 votes.

I hear students complaining all the time, but rarely do I see those students actually involved in what they complain about.

At the same time, how can we expect students to take interest in the ASU when our school newspaper consistently writes negative articles about us?

What about highlighting things we do when we are not involved in petty bickering? Like attending countless meetings on behalf of students, putting on numerous events and fielding a plethora of specific student concerns.

So, despite what The Valley Star and some passionate - though misguided - individuals may write about us, the ASU has been and will continue to work hard for the students of Los Angeles Valley College.

If you have a concern, question, or just want to talk, we're here for you in Campus Center 102.

ASU Chief Justice
