Freshman Antoinette Burton finished her season as the 5th best high jumper in the state with a jump of 5'2" in the state meet held on May 14 in Sacramento.

"It feels great to have qualified [for state], but I feel so empty because only the top four get a medal," said Burton.

Burton whose person record is 5'4" was the only one on the Valley team to qualify for state.

"It's a privilege to make it this far as a freshman," said Burton. "I want to thank the coaches for all their hard work and for continuing on with
me."

Both the men's and women's teams ended their seasons earlier this month, and this group of mostly freshman had a few top place finishers.

"We had a great season," said thrower Henry Segura. "We had a lot of competition, but we overcame all of the obstacles."

Along with Burton's second place finish in the conference, Jenny Portillo finished sixth in the pole vault with a jump of 9'6" and Alma Palacios finished fifth in the steeple with a time of 13:31.3. In the relays the 4x100 meter team came in fourth place with a time of 52.40 seconds and the 4x400 meter team came in seventh place with a time of 4:28.8.

Overall, the track team had a good season with many highlights, especially Portillo breaking the school record in pole vault halfway through the season.

"We really grew together as a team," said hurdler Charles King. "We became a family."
