CYPRESS-Valley softball ended its season with a heartbreaking 1-0 extra inning loss to Saddleback College on Sunday May 8. The Lady Monarchs were officially eliminated from playoff contention as they lost 8-1 to the
Cypress Lancers Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Monarchs finished their 2005 campaign with a 27-14- 1 overall record.

Even with the first round loss, Head Coach Frankie Garcia expressed a sense of accomplishment for a team that played its first playoff appearance in school history.

"It was incredible," Garcia said of the season. "I was very pleased to see the payoff of all these ladies' hard work."

Entering regional play as a 13th seed, the Lady Monarchs struggled against their top seeded counterparts as they scored just one run in the two losses.

"We were prepared as a team but there's a big difference between the playoffs and the regular season," said Garcia.

According to Garcia, even though the Lady Monarchs exited the playoffs early, it was a tremendous step for them in the right direction as the team is still rebuilding.

"One of my main goals for this season was to get into the regional [playoffs]," said freshman center fielder Breckon Bronner. "I knew coming in that Valley wasn't too good, but we did well this season."

For sophomore catcher Lorena Arreguin, the season's success did come at a price.

"It hurt because we knew that our final game was going to be against Glendale. So, we set ourselves up for it," said Arreguin. "But, this year, because we made playoffs, we didn't know when our run was going to end, and unfortunately we left a lot sooner than we wanted too."

Arreguin also added that she improved greatly as a player and learned a lot from the Garcia and her coaching staff.

"The experience was fantastic," sophomore pitcher/outfielder Amanda Salazar said. "Coach Garcia always said that it was a risk to play at Valley, but her coaching staff and confidence really made me want to come. It's been great, and it went by quickly."
