For the first time since 2002, Valley College is offering a double summer session, increasing the number of available classes for students.

"I want to take advantage of it," said commercial music major Fernando Charles, 23. "It's a good opportunity for people who need more classes."

The two five-week semesters will offer more than 350 classes between them. The first will run from June 13 through July 17 and the second will be from July 18 through Aug. 21.

"A double summer session can be a good opportunity for Valley College students, particularly for students who are transitioning from high school to college, working people and those in four-year universities who like to condense semesters," said Richard Pfefferman, Valley's dean of Academic Affairs. "They get to finish in five weeks."

This is not the first time Valley has offered two summer sessions, but lack of funds ended the practice in 2002. According to Pfefferman, increased enrollment in summer may qualify the school to receive additional funding now offered by the state. They anticipate that by offering classes that students need they will accomplish that goal.

But despite the obvious benefits there are still some concerns.

"In general students need to be more cautious," said Fay Dea, counseling professor. "Each course moves almost three times as fast as those that are offered during fall or spring semesters. Students might take classes that are hard to handle in five weeks and they will end up failing or barely passing."

Dea recommends that students planning to take summer classes stay away from subjects like English and Math. She said that although it might be appealing to finish a class in five weeks, students should be aware that the increased workload might jeopardize their grades.

Students may enroll in classes online at www.lavc.edu or by calling (818) 988-2222, (213) 689-8888, (310) 605-0505 or (323) 226-1999. Valley will also be offering free parking to the students attending the summer sessions.
