The men's cross country team saw a few of its runners set personal-best times and gain valuable experience at the Golden West Invitational last weekend. The team entered the meet with injuries to key runners but still managed to place 14th out of 23 teams.
"It was really good competition," said Monarch co-captain Michael Stotland. "I set a personal record and I'm very satisfied with everybody's performance."
Stotland improved his personal best to 22:11, shaving 40 seconds off last year's time.
The men started the race near the front of the pack in the four-mile race, keeping a quick pace as the lead runners pushed on. Co-captains Jordan Castellanos and Stotland ran strong for Valley as the elite runners began to pull away from the pack. The rest of the Monarch team ran farther back in a group.
In the first two miles of the race the Monarch runners maintained poise as they ran through the steep hilly portion of the course. Valley runners kicked it into high gear as they entered the fourth and final mile when the team members closed in on personal best records.
Castellanos led the Monarchs, finishing the race at 22:03. The combination of Castellanos and Stotland helped the Monarchs finish in 16th place.
The Lady Monarchs managed a good showing, with a few of their top runners injured.
"I did well even though I am hurt," Alma Palacios said. Palacios ran strong as she battled through the three-mile course with a knee injury.
Myriam Lemailloux was named athlete of the week after stepping up for an injured Natasha Ibrahim. The Lady Monarchs plowed through the hills and continued on as the second and third miles approached.
Palacios led the team and finished in 46th place overall to lead the Lady Monarchs. Lemailloux placed in 104th out of 250 runners.
"We have a good kid this year; we are getting better every day," said Cross Country Head Coach Francois Wolman after the meet.
The Monarchs hope to retain momentum from last week's performance when they compete in the Bakersfield Invitational Friday.
