Juliana Alvarez is a political science major in her second year at Valley College and the new ASU Parliamentarian.
At 19 years old, the full time student decided to pursue a role in student government to get hands on experience for what she loves, Politics. Raised in Van Nuys, she discovered her passion for politics during a high school government course in her senior year at Van Nuys High School.
"I loved my teacher's impartial teaching method," the 5'5" Alvarez said. "He always explained things without taking sides and after taking his class I realized that politics was what I wanted to do."
After having participated in political science courses and clubs like the Transfer club during her first year at Valley, she decided this was a good time to join the ASU.
"I realized that this is what I wanted to do," Alvarez said. "The parliamentarian role interested me so I decided to join."
The soft-spoken Alvarez is quickly adapting to her job as parliamentarian, which requires her to establish order among the ASU and assure everyone is given a voice. Even with her late appointment, her fellow board members have high hopes of what they can achieve together.
"She seems very dedicated," Commissioner of Campus/Environmental Affairs Rachel Davis said. "I look forward to working with her and getting to know her better."
ASU Treasurer Diane Avakian and Commissioner of Evening Division Rose Oganesyan both worked with Alvarez at the Transfer club and were left with positive impressions.
"She's real smart," Avakian said. "She was the treasurer for the Transfer club when we worked together and she did a good job." Oganesyan agreed, "She's a very sweet and nice person."
Alvarez is excited about her new role and hopes the experiences will help her in reaching her goal of transferring to either UCLA or UC-Irvine in political science.
"I knew this would be a challenge," Alvarez said. "But it's would be good for me because I love what I'm doing."
