From the Governator to Bulworth? Make It Stop!

What did Californians really expect upon electing a governor whose political qualifications were ... wait ... he didn't have any?! It's enough to make those who skipped the polls that day nearly three years ago dance in the streets out of pride that they left it up to moviegoers to make the decision.

At the risk of sounding apathetic, are we really any better off than we were with Gray Davis? Sure, schoolchildren are eating healthier and rolling blackouts are a joke of the past. On the other hand, where's that tax break? Minimum wage stutters at $6.75 an hour- after taxes, that's almost two whole gallons of gas.

Few remember accusations of groping or even Arnie's less-than-complimentary comments about women made in his 1970s Mr. Universe documentary "Pumping Iron." He doesn't hate women, he simple sees us as the useless objects we obviously are. Same goes for teachers and nurses.

Once controversial, those issues have settled quietly into the backs of our minds, edged out by his unsatisfactory budget, $2 billion owed to schools and that festering situation with expanding the 405. Kudos to those of you who have no idea what any of those things are.

Nearing the Nov. 8 special-election ballot, Schwarzenegger's approval rating has slid all the way down to 36 percent, which is actually one percent lower than Bush's at the moment.

It just goes to show that it doesn't matter anymore if you're a Republican or a die-hard Terminator fan or even have empathy for the effect steroids had on his poor forehead. Perhaps we've finally gotten close to realizing the importance of electing a qualified official.

But then again, maybe not. We are Californians. Warren Beatty and Rob Reiner are rumored as possible contenders for next year's re-election on news wires and in entertainment circles alike.

At a recent nurses' convention in Oakland, Beatty ripped Schwarzenegger apart beneath a 'Stop Arnold' sign. The nurses reportedly cheered, "Run, Warren, run!" Please, somebody, make it stop.
