America is no longer a country of its people. It is, instead, a country of its rulers. This is the mind set of those who oppose Proposition 75.

If Prop. 75 passes it will give union workers such as teachers, firefighters and police officers the right to choose whether or not money from their paychecks should be used for political purposes.

As of now, union leaders can take money from the paychecks of these workers and disperse them as they wish among political parties of their choice.

The Los Angeles Times believes that "Proposition 75 constitutes an important step in the right direction."

Union leaders, however, are enraged by Prop. 75 which is no surprise considering it will cut their power immensely and limit their control over the hard-working members they represent.

While opposing Proposition 22 a 2000 initiative that defined marriage as between a man and a woman, unions spent $68,000 of public employee unions' money even though a Los Angeles Times exit poll found that 58 percent of union households had voted yes on the initative.

And during the recall of former Gov. Gray Davis, unions spent $25.7 million to oppose the recall, yet exit polls found that 56 percent voted for a Republican candidate to replace him.

It seems that these unions are not working as hard to serve their members as they are at dispersing union money according to their dictates.

Is this the Prop. 75 our teachers, firefighters and police officers are fighting against?

Imagine you're a teacher and you just finished lecturing a class about the importance of your first amendment right to free speech only to go home to find a portion of your paycheck handed out to a politician without your consent.

Union leaders must start being more accountable to their members.

They have more power than they need and less supervision than ever.

It is un-American and should be illegal to take money from the paychecks of hard-working Americans and use it to the benefit of politicians they may not even support.

Some of you may not be directly affected by this proposition but rest assured, if union leaders can get away with controlling the political agenda of its members, there's nothing stopping those in higher positions from doing the same.
