The Valley College Monarchs traveled 200 miles to face the high-powered Allan Hancock College Bulldogs Saturday night. Six Valley interceptions and 55 Bulldog points later, the Monarchs trudged home still in search of their first win.

Allan Hancock (4-0) trounced Valley (0-4), 55-28, and the game wasn't even that close.

Knowing they had to up their game to stay on the field with the powerful visitors, the Monarchs came out with high intensity. However, the Bulldogs scored on the third play of the game as running back Drew Williams went 62 yards on a draw play.

Valley answered on the next possession by driving the ball 80 yards with an effective mix of runs and passes, culminating in a 30-yard post pattern from quarterback Corey Jones to wide receiver Antoine Palmer.

But the Bulldogs took control of the rest of the quarter, with running back Anthony Melton dominating the Monarch defense. Allan Hancock put up two unanswered scores to open up a 21-7 lead.

Jones was harassed all night by a tenacious Bulldog defense, his passes frequently finding players in the wrong jerseys.

"We need to eliminate the turnovers," said Jones. "I can't throw six picks, especially against a good team like Allan Hancock."

In the second quarter the Bulldogs broke loose of the leash, scoring 20 points. The Monarch offense did get into a rhythm at the end of the quarter, as the offense drove 90 yards. Jones connected with receiver Franco Stasilli for the score to end the half trailing 41-14.

Both teams capitalized on opponent mistakes to start the third quarter. The Bulldogs scored on a 10-yard run after another Jones interception.

The Monarchs responded by recovering a fumble on the next Bulldogs' possession, returning it 65 yards by Valley defensive back Jerrell Sanford for the touchdown to make it 48-21.

But the Bulldog offense would find the end zone again on an 18-yard run by Curtis Chatmon in the last three minutes of the quarter.
