The Valley College Associated Student Union is currently without a treasurer after its former treasurer Gayanne "Diane" Avakian resigned in January.
Avakian, who began her yearlong term as treasurer in 2005, said the decision to resign had nothing to do with any personal conflicts and was because of her busy school and work schedules.
"Everybody was cool and did a great job," Avakian said. "I didn't have any problems; it was just that I had too many things going on … I didn't want to stay and do a bad job."
ASU President Nelli Martirosyan said the move initially surprised her, but she understood Avakian's decision to step down.
"I thought she did the right thing if things in her life have changed," Martirosyan said. "If she had become busy this semester … it's better to leave the organization and let those do the work that have the time, than to stay in the organization and do nothing."
The responsibilities of the treasurer include attending weekly ASU meetings, maintaining the ASU budget and keeping accurate records of all expenditures. The treasurer must also chair a weekly finance committee in addition to facilitating the development of budgets for the next fiscal year and attending monthly campus budget committee meetings, all of which Martirosyan credits Avakian as doing well.
"I have always been extremely satisfied with Diana's work," Martirosyan said. "She was a passionate and hard working individual … she did a terrific job in the ASU."
With the position now vacant, the ASU has opened it up for all Valley students.
Students interested in the job can obtain an application by visiting the ASU offices in Campus Center 102 or by visiting the ASU page on the at www.lavc.edu.
Applications must be turned into CC102 by the deadline of March 3 at 4 p.m. The interviews will take place Tuesday March 7 in CC104 during the ASU meeting at 12:45 p.m.
