Epillepsy is more than Feeling Drunk
Issue date: 4/18/07 Section: Opinion
I'm writing about the article "Instructor Assistant Returns to Work." As a student who also is epileptic and works at informing others how to handle an emergency I was disappointed with this article. Ms. Robinson is misinformed in believing seizures are not harmful to the brain. If someone witnesses a person having a seizure they should protect the person's head and lay them on their side. Nothing is to go into their mouth, which is a common misconception. If a seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes an ambulance should be called. Epilepsy is indeed a disability and can be quite dangerous. Not all epileptics experience feeling "drunk."
This article did a poor job of accurately conveying epilepsy. Ms. Shaffer and Ms. Robinson should check out www.epilepsy.com to educate themselves on epilepsy facts and statistics.
