Taco vendors are giving discounts to customers and at the same time contributing to the national Immigrant Justice Campaign by accepting coupons at their taco trucks and restaurants throughout the country. The national campaign is a response to the National Latino Congreso held in El Paso, Texas this past January as an effort to include millions of local immigrant justice supporters to achieve legalization of 10-12 million undocumented persons in the United States.
"Through Tacos for Justice the simple act of eating is converted into an act of social justice," said Erin Glenn, Executive Director of the Asociación de Loncheros L.A. Familia Unida de California. "Our trucks will give a 10 percent discount to every patron as well as donate to the National Immigrant Justice Campaign for every Tacos for Justice coupon used in a purchase of the ‘Justice Menu' at our participating trucks."
More than 1 million discount coupons are being issued by the Latino Voters League, an advocacy group designated by the National Latino Congress to manage the proceeds. In Los Angeles, some 200,000 coupons have been distributed to participating organizations to give to their members including Anahuak Youth Sports Association, La Placita Church, Mexican American Political Association, National Day Laborers Network, William C. Velasquez Institute, National Alliance of Latin American and Caribbean Communities, Hermandad Mexicana Latinoamericana, and others.
Although no participating vendors in the San Fernando Valley have yet been announced, Jorge Gonzalez, a cinema major at Valley who is currently waiting for permanent legal residency status, said he is willing to go out of his way to support the cause.
"I'm all for it," he said. "It's our own people helping our people." He believes, however, "Immigration reform should benefit all people."
The money gathered through Tacos for Justice will fund organizers and media in key states and congressional districts throughout the country to persuade federal legislators to support good immigration reform bills, such as the Dream Act that would legalize 65,000 college-eligible, undocumented high school graduates.
The taco truck addresses can be found on the back of the coupons. They are also available online at www.tacasparajusticia.org, where free coupons can also be downloaded.
