With ever tightening finances and the cost of education still on the rise, many students look towards scholarships and grants in order to finance their education. The Financial Aid office at Valley helps students obtain private, federal and state aid, grants and scholarships, while helping students utilize the funds and resources at their availability.

Although most students apply and receive Financial Aid, many aren’t aware of the availability of the scholarships through the LAVC Foundation.

“Financial Aid was a big help,” said broadcasting student Antwone Mercer. “I wasn’t aware that I could apply for any additional scholarships through the LAVC foundation.”

The LAVC foundation is a non-profit organization which helps alumnus and community members donate scholarships and gifts to the students of Valley College. The foundation’s committee consists of two groups of seven people who decide whom receives the generous donations made in amounts typically ranging from $250 to $1,500, based on guidelines and specifications requested by the donors.

“I never applied because of the time it takes, but now that I know there are scholarships available through the LAVC foundation, I will apply,” said Valley student Joanne Raymundo.

All students are welcomed to apply for scholarships and as long as they fit the criteria established by donors, they will be considered as a scholarship applicant. Most scholarships don’t request that the student have residency, offering non-residents students who are otherwise unable to obtain financial aid for their education, an opportunity at some financial relief.

“Scholarships benefit students and are made available to everybody, with a different kind for everybody,” said Roxy Zamora, Senior Assistant to President of Academic Affairs, Sue Carleo.

With over 75 different kinds of scholarships available, there is one to fit every students needs. However, the scholarships are not available forever, with a window open from January 23rd to March 13th, applicants must be sure to apply in a timely fashion. The unused scholarships may be made available to other students, recycled back into the program for later use or sometimes will be taken back by the donors, so students need to make sure they apply.

“There are so many scholarship opportunities for students, but some students just don’t believe in themselves enough to try and apply,” said Valley student Arpine Lalayan.

Besides on campus financial aid and the LAVC foundation there are several more resources for scholarships and grants to help fund students’ education. Websites such as Fastweb.com, Scholarships.com and Finacialaidfinder.com are all dedicated to helping students find public and private scholarships and grants. These web sights also help with essays, applications and filtering through the many available grants and scholarships; but the downside is that many have pushy ads for online education. The LAVC Foundation works solely for Valley College and will not attempt to sway students to a different school, line of study and students are allowed to apply for scholarships no matter what their major.
