Valley College's "Valley Star" newspaper competed in the Southern California Journalism Association of Community Colleges conference last weekend at Cal State Fullerton. The conference comprised of various competitions and workshops awarded several Valley Star staff members with individual awards and a general excellence award to the spring 2009 edition of the paper.
JACC is an event which takes place twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring, gathering community colleges throughout the state to partake in mail-in and on the spot competitions for journalism majors.
The mail-in competition consists of thirty-seven categories including layout, editorial writing, critical reviews, sports photography, opinion writing, and news writing all judged by voluntary workers who host the event.
The on the spot competitions take place the weekend of the conference, hosting sixteen different competitions including copy editing, feature story, feature writing, news judgment layout, sports story and more. Each competition is timed and then judged based upon Associated Press style, content, and cohesiveness.
Award winners from the Valley Star included Photo Editor Scott Mitchell, Online Editor Israel Gutierrez, Editor in Chief Sarah Knowles, Staff Photographer Ana Rosa, Chief Photographer Samuel Oskner, Staff Cartoonist Eduardo Hererra, and Managing Editor Josh Spence.
The paper was also awarded a General Excellence award, a contest which is based on various criteria including balance of stories, photography, overall writing, page design and more.
