  • Lady Monarchs Softball to Play and Practice Off Campus Next Semester

    Valley College will build a new four-level parking structure where the softball field is located.

    The Valley College Lady Monarchs softball team will be practicing and playing offcampus for the 2014 season, as a new parking structure is scheduled to be constructed this summer where the current softball field is located. “We will be on an off-campus facility for the 2014 season,” said Frankie Garcia, thecurrent softball coach at Valley.

    Monarchs Track and Field Coaches Hope to Do Well in State Championship Pre-Lims

    The Valley College track and field teams hopes to excel in state championship.

    The Valley College men’s and women’s track and field teams are getting ready for the California State Championship this week. “Qualifying for the state championship [made] it a successful season—not a phenomenal one, but successful,” said Valley’s head coach Francois Wolman.

    In a season filled with questionable player returns, there was no question about how the Lakers’ season would end. After all, they were just avoiding the unavoidable. Everyone thought that playing the Spurs in the first round would give the Lakers a better chance to move forward in the post season.

    Monarchs Welcome New Women's Soccer Coach

    San Fernando Valley native Greg Venger is the new head coach for the lady Monarchs soccer team.

      Coach Greg Venger has worked at Valley College for two weeks, but he is already sporting a green Monarchs sweatshirt and holding a ring full of nearly 20 identical keys to various doors on campus.  Venger is replacing Shane Watkins as the women’s soccer coach, but his mid-semester hire happened late in the game.

  • Dodger Veteran Expected to Pilot Boys in Blue into Upcoming Season

    Matt Kemp makes his presence felt both on and off the field becoming the Dodgers’ undisputed leader.

    Last year, upstate rivals, San Francisco Giants gave the Dodgers more to feel blue about after winning their second World Series in the past three years. After missing the post season, the Dodgers have added different players, from places ranging from the Dominican Republic, to Ohio, to Australia.

    Monarchs Lose Third Consecutive Game

    The baseball team was defeated by Oxnard College, making it their third straight lose.

    The Valley College baseball team lost 14-2 to the Oxnard Pirates Monday, making it the Monarchs’ third consecutive loss. “We were rolling the lineup over,” said Oxnard head coach Jon Larson. “There wasn’t really a stop in it.” Oxnard has struggled this year, losing in the ninth inning of most of its games, but in the game against the Monarchs, Oxnard was able to secure a win early.

    Monarch Football Players Headed to Four-Year Colleges

    Valley College’s Amir Saleh and Ekene Mordi received scholarships to four-year universities.

      Valley College football players Amir Saleh and Ekene Mordi have received scholarships to four-year universities for the fall semester. Saleh will be attending South Dakota Tech, and Mordi will be transferring to Texas Prairie View A&M. “It’s been my intent to go to a four-year school and get a degree,” said Saleh.

    The Lakers’ troubled season has Kobe playing the best basketball of his career.

      Number twenty-four. That’s how he’s playing, as if he was 24 again. Kobe Bryant, or “Vino” as he’s been recently called, is proof that age is just a number, looking and playing better than he did when he was 24 years old.  We all remember when Bryant scored 81 points against Toronto in 2006, but no one could have predicted that he would still be having 40-point games when he’s nearly 40 himself.

    Lady Monarchs' Season Comes to an End

    The Lady Monarchs’ season ended last Wednesday night after losing to San Bernardino College.

      The Lady Monarchs’ winning season came to an end this past Wednesday after losing 61-55 to the San Bernardino Wolverines in the second round of the Southern California Regional playoffs. Valley was down by double digits most of the game but fought back to get within 6 points in the second half.

    Monarchs Guard Is Five-Time Player of the Week

    Women’s basketball star was named Player of the Month in January.

    Lady Monarchs forward and guard Ani Avanessian was named athlete of the month this past January. In addition, Avanessian has also been recognized as the Western Conference player of the week five times this season—and now, she has led her team to a Western State Conference championship.

    After the death of Jerry Buss, his childrem are left with the Laker dynasty.

    Jerry Buss, the creator of Showtime and the architect of one of the most storied professional sports teams ever, died last week leaving a team valued at $1 billion to his children. “Just knowing that he was there was a good feeling to me,” said Mitch Kupchak, the Lakers general manager to the Los Angeles Times.

    Lady Monarchs New Western State Conference Champions

    The Valley College women’s basketball team won the Western State Conference championship.

      Saturday night, the strain of Queen’s “We are the Champions” filled the air in the Monarchs’ gym where a new banner will soon hang. The Valley College women’s basketball team is the new 2012-2013 Western State Conference champions, finishing with a record of 11-1 in conference and 22-8 for the season.

  • Heat Scorches Even in Water

    Valley College sports coaches ensure their players remain hydrated on the field and in the pool.

    Although the summer may have petered out its last day on September 21, San Fernando Valley temperatures still linger between the 90s and the 100s, placing Valley College coaches on edge to keep their players at their best. To fight the heat—such as this past Monday and Tuesday’s National Weather Services’ records of 102 to 107-degree highs—coaches follow strict hydration guidelines for their players to maintain equilibrium in their systems.

  • Monarchs Lose Fifth Consecutive Football Game

    Valley lost its fifth straight game of the season to the Antelope Valley Marauders.

    In  a night where the Monarchs’ offense looked good in spurts, the Valley College defense failed to stop Antelope Valley College, losing its fifth game of the season 55-7. “We didn’t come to the battle the way we did the last couple of weeks,” said Valley coach Larry Kerr.

  • The Valley College Cheer Squad Has Spirit During Tough Times

    Valley’s cheer squad supports the Monarchs through good and bad.

    Although it has been a tough football season for Valley College so far, the Monarch Spirit Dance squad cheers for the green and gold through triumphs and adversity. “Our boys, they try out there,” said co-captain Karim Coleman on the team’s struggles this season.

  • GYMNASTICS CENTER OPEN TO ALL AGES

    The Valley College Gymnastics Center offers classes to its surrounding neighbors.

    The Valley College Gymnastics Center has begun a new era under the leadership of former Monarch gymnast Charles Johnson. Rebuilding a program that lost many of its participants and much of its staff over the summer has become Johnson’s new goal. “We started out with zero enrollment, and now we have maybe 150-plus students since the change over,” Johnson said.

  • Vaqueros Hold Monarchs Offense

    Valley lost its fourth straight game against Santa Barbara last Saturday.

    The Santa Barbara defense allowed only 141 total offensive yards last Saturday night, defeating the Monarchs 14-6 and giving Valley College its fourth consecutive loss of the season. In the second home game of the season, the Monarchs’ offense was the first to score.

  • Track and Pool Now Open to Community

    Access to Valley’s pool and track offers fitness options to the community.

    Valley College keeps the “community” in community college, allowing the general public access to its pools, stadium, track and other facilities. According to Athletic Director Jim Fenwick, the plan is to keep it that way. “Plans for our new facilities have been taken off moratorium and are back on track, which definitely include public access,” said Fenwick.

  • Valley College Fitness Center Keeps Students Fit

    The Valley College Fitness Center offers workout equipment to students.

    Hidden in the South Gym next to the Aquatic Center, the Valley College Fitness Center boasts nine treadmills, 13 bicycles and 10 elliptical machines as well as dozens of various weightlifting and resistance machines for students and the rest of the community.

  • Football Coach Named New Athletic Director

    Former head football coach, Jim Fenwick, is now the sports department’s new athletic director.

    Putting his 35-plus years of coaching experience to a new use, former Monarchs football coach Jim Fenwick has taken over retiree Diedra Stark’s position as Valley College’s athletic director. “I wear a lot of hats,” Fenwick said regarding his new position.

  • Valley College Monarchs Lose to East Los Angeles Huskies in Season Opener

    Survivor’s “Eye Of The Tiger” played in the background as the unseasoned Monarchs stepped onto the gridiron, but unlike Rocky, there was no vic- tory on Saturday as the Monarchs dropped its season opener to East Los Angeles College 40-13. “The first game is always tough,” said first-year Valley College coach Larry Kerr.

  • Football Department Plans Ahead, Was Host To Possible Valley Recruits

    Monarch football coach Jim Fenwick invited Southern California high school teams to Valley College.

      The Monarchs’ third annual Air Passing Tournament attracted 24 local high schools to Monarch Stadium Saturday, giving the Valley College football program an early look at some of the top student-athletes from Highland to Calabasas. “This is a great way to expose our facility to 24 high schools [from] across Southern California and raise [a little] money,” said Valley football coach Jim Fenwick.

    As the Monarch football team begins spring training, coach Fenwick continues the search for linemen.

      Valley College athletics Hall of Fame coach Jim Fenwick has been part of the Monarch family since 1991. He quickly made his mark on the gridiron after two short years of joining Valley, making his junior college football program one of best in the state.

  • The Underlying Consequences of Concussions

    Death of Chargers linebacker leads to question how detrimental high-risk sports are to players.

      With the recent addition of retired National Football League linebacker Junior Seau to the list of players who have died from apparent suicides, many people—especially researchers—question how much to attribute high-risk sports to these deaths. According to USA Today, the 43 year old had more than 1,500 concussions over the course of his football career after one of his former teammates, Gary Plummer, calculated the number from statistics he attained during a 1990s concussion seminar and from his own experience as a linebacker.

  • University Scholarships Awarded To Eighteen Monarch Football Players

    Sophomores on the Valley's football roster will play for four-year universities this fall.

      Eighteen sophomores on the Valley College football team received scholarships to four-year universities for the fall semester. “I can’t tell you how rewarding it is for me to see a young man get a scholarship,” said football coach Jim Fenwick. “ … To have their books, room, board and tuition paid for, it makes their journey through school so much easier.

  • Monarchs Come Up Short In First Round Of Playoffs

    Two Valley sophomore starters were selected for the Southern Division First Team.

      The Monarchs baseball team ended the season with a 20-19 record after losing a three-game series to No. 1 seed Orange Coast College in the Southern California Regional Playoffs. Valley College trailed the Pirates 4-0 going into the ninth inning of the first game of the series.

      Confused and lacking confidence, Samantha Suarez came to Valley College in hopes of obtaining an associate’s degree. Two years later, she has blossomed into an enlightened and confident softball player at the hands of softball coach Frankie Garcia.

  • Monarchs Misfire in Sweeping College of the Canyons

    The Monarch baseball team split a conference two-game series Saturday with College of the Canyons.

      The Monarchs split a two-game series Saturday against College of the Canyons, failing to extend a four-game winning streak. The 7-6 defeat in the second game of the series gave Valley its 16th loss of the season. “We were in control [and] doing pretty well,” said Valley coach Dave Mallas.

    Prep Football America brought evaluation camp to Monarch Stadium to test top h.s. student athletes.

      Two hundred student-athletes were carefully selected from 125 Southern California high schools and invited to attend Sunday afternoon’s Prep Football America’s National Combine Series at Monarch Stadium—whose host was Valley College’s football coach, Jim Fenwick.

  • Freshman Pitcher Named SoCal Player of the Week

    Valley's Travis Cassidy pitched complete game against Bakersfield, earning player of the week.

      Sporting sunglasses and standing at a towering 6 foot 2 inches, 20-year-old Monarch pitcher Travis Cassidy has been a great attribution to Valley College’s baseball team this season. “So far this season, nothing fazes Travis,” said coach Dave Mallas.

  • Monarch Baseball Collects Win Against West L.A. College

    The Monarch baseball team defeated West LA College Saturday 11-8, making it its second victory.

      The Valley College baseball team won a second consecutive game, defeating West Los Angeles College Saturday 11-8. This gave the Monarch team its 10th conference win of the season. The Monarchs capitalized in the bottom of the first inning after Wildcats pitcher Jose Terrero walked two Valley players, loading the bases for Nathan Mendez, Valley’s designated hitter.

  • All City High School Football Player Comes To Valley College

    Valley student has high hopes of making his way to the football team and higher education.

    Covered in tattoos and standing at a statuesque 6 foot 1 inch, the 250-pound, 18-year-old Anthony Romualdo is noticed everywhere he goes, and now he has come to Valley College. “I came to Valley because it’s closer to where I live. I like the school, and I’m confident in my ability,” said Romualdo.

  • Monarchs Collect Third Consecutive Victory Against Pierce

    the Monarchs collect three consecutive conference wins in the last week.

    After being down seven runs in yesterday’s game against Pierce College, the Valley College baseball team rallied by scoring 12 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, securing the team’s 10th victory of the season. At the top of the sixth, the Monarchs were down 11-4 after Pierce took advantage of Valley’s bad pitching in the fourth inning.

  • Women’s Basketball Player Earns Full Ride to UC Irvine

    Valley College basketball player Vanessa Aguilar earned a full-ride scholarship to UC Irvine.

    Valley College women's basketball guard Vanessa Aguliar had her pick of a full ride to three schools. With over 240 points scored in conference-play and mesmerizing agility, the Valley talent was offered full scholarships to the University of California Irvine, Hawaii Pacific University and Cal State University, Monterey Bay.

  • Pearlman Breaks Record

    Molly Pearlman set a new pole-vaulting record at Valley College.

    Valley College’s freshman pole vaulter, Molly Pearlman, hopes one day to jump three times her height. Despite standing at just 5’1, her lengthy goal has helped her break several records, including Valley’s record of 9.9.25 feet by clearing the bar at 11 feet.

    Valley College defeats College of the Canyons but can't get past San Bernardino in the second round.

    The Valley College men's basketball team (16-12) ended its seaon Saturday after losing to San Bernardino Valley in the quarter-finals of the Southern California Regional Playoffs. "These guys play with passion and heart," said Monarchs coach Virgil Watson.

    The Valley College baseball team defeated Palomar Community College 2-1 Saturday.

    "This was a great game, but I give all the credit to Travis," said outfielder Casey Ryan. " He pitched a hell of a game ... it was very impressive." the Monarchs capitalized in the bottom of the first inning after Ryan stole both second and third base off of an error.

    Valley College track and field coach François Wolman has had a passion for track ever since he stepped foot onto the Fairfax High School team as a sopho­more. “I fell into it,” said Wolman. “ This is my passion.” Born and raised in Paris, Wolman grew up playing soccer.

  • The Lady Monarchs End Season Without Playoff Berth

    Despite three consecutive victories, Lady Monarch basketball team missed its chance at the playoffs.

    The Valley College women’s basketball team wrapped up the 2011-2012 season Saturday with a bittersweet 68-to-55 victory against the Glendale Community College Vaqueros. “I feel good about the season. It ended off on a good note and I’m proud of my girls,” said Lady Monarch guard Vanessa Aguilar.

  • A Second Half Blowout Gives the Monarchs a Rude Awakening

    The Santa monica corsairs held Valley College scoreless Saturday in the second half, winning 26-22.

    The Monarchs fell short Saturday against the Santa Monica Corsairs, giving up 20 unanswered points in the second half, in a 22-26 loss which gave Valley College it's fourth defeat of the season. "That's the series that defines you," said Corsairs Coach Gifford Lindheim.

  • Critics Remain Ignorant Over Change

    The NCAA finally wises up and does what it should have decades ago.

    Last Thursday the governing organization for college athletes gave conferences the ability to issue up to $2,000 in stipend money to student athletes. This money is in addition to any scholarships the student athlete receives, and is meant to help cover the remaining costs incurred for their college education.

    The Valley College Monarchs take the good with the bad in Saturday’s 24-12 victory.

      The Monarch football team broke its two-game losing streak Saturday, beating the San Diego Mesa Olympians 24-12. Despite the victory, the team suffered a major loss when quarterback Dan Owen broke his femur early in the second quarter. The injury leaves Owen out for the season and possibly more.

    Road Runners Too Quick for Valley

    College of the Desert’s run game was too much for the Monarchs in a deflating loss Saturday night.

    The College of the Desert Road Runners outran the Monarchs Saturday with 266-yards of rushing that gave the visitors a 41-9 win. Jai Stieb led the assault for the Road Runners with 14 carries, 83 yards and two touchdowns. Darius Johnson chipped in with 55 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown.
