The cold crisp air and violent gusts of wind, at times, made fastballs look like change-ups. The weather, however, gave neither team the advantage, as both L.A Mission and Valley College began their conference play at 1-1. “Well there’s only one way that can happen, and that’s if the wind and the cold stop for them,” Head Coach Frankie Garcia said of the poor weather conditions.

Not the brightest of days for the Valley College swim team who competed against Pierce College last Friday. That did not stop the Monarchs and a crowd of about 30 people who showed their support for a spring sport, which endured winter weather conditions.

In their first conference game of the season Saturday, the Monarchs stop a 10-game losing streak.

With the bases fully loaded, down by one in the bottom of the ninth, last Saturday, infielder Miguel Cejas doubled, bringing in two runners to defeat College of the Canyons 6-5. The victory, which came just at the right time, ended the Monarchs ten-game losing streak in their first conference game of the season.

The Finals Belong To The Tigers... Again

Monarchs lose 94-59 in the second round of the playoffs Saturday, against the 2009 CCCAA champions.

After defeating Mira Costa College last Wednesday 74-55 in the first round of the Southern California Regionals, the Monarchs chance at the finals would be decided by none other than the 2009 state champion, the Riverside Tigers (23-6). Watching from the stands, the blaring horns and deafening crowd drowned out the game itself at times; the noise, however, was not coming from the Valley offense.

A Valley College instructor breathes life into an endangered student, and expresses the importance of CPR training, especially in sports. CPR has saved countless lives. Saturday Feb. 20, it saved the life of a Valley student, who—ironically—was attending a CPR training class when he collapsed due to an asthma attack.

Women’s basketball Head Coach Jay Werner has always been into athletics, playing football while at Agoura High School and then Pierce College. Even though he regularly played street basketball, it was not until he attended San Diego State University from 1978 to 1979, when ESPN first started that he was intrigued in college basketball.

Women’s Basketball lost 60-58 in last Saturday’s final game against Santa Monica College.

Santa Monica made the final seconds feel like hours. Using all of their remaining three timeouts in the final seconds of the game, hopes of a playoff berth were halted by the visiting Corsairs who defeated the Monarchs 60-58 Saturday night. “I always save the time outs for situational stuff and thank god we had them…we got lucky and got it,” Santa Monica Head Coach Lydia Strong said.

The stage was set. As the seven Valley College sophomores approached mid-court with their parents Saturday night, a win would mean two things: going out on top and having a chance at playoffs. Controlling the game for the majority of regulation, the Monarchs managed to fight off any momentum the visiting Corsairs showed.
