A bevy of breeds braved this weekend's triple-digit San Fernando Valley heat to strut their stuff across Valley College's north lawn. The Burbank Kennel Club (a group licensed by the American Kennel Club) hosted the event.

Competition categories included breed, sex, age and group. Pedigreed pooches squared off against other prime specimens in their category for coveted ribbons and the distinction that goes with winning. Winners of "Best in Breed" also competed against each other for Best in Show," the ultimate top dog honor.

Dr. Daniel W. Dowling was one of the judges at Sunday's shows.

"Every breed has its own standard written by the American Kennel Club," said Dowling. "It's the judge's job to find the dog that comes closest to that standard."

Many human participants at this weekend's shows were as pristinely groomed and attired as the dogs they showed. Burbank Kennel Club, Board Director, Tom Dune was dressed to impress in a fashionable outfit topped off with an eye-catching white hat and coat.

"Most club members were just exhibitors at first, but they liked exhibiting so much they joined the club." said Dune.

Valley's many shade trees campus received Dune's praises. "This campus is one of the best venues," said Dune. "Dogs and people appreciate the shade from these trees. There are more trees in this area, than some venues have on their whole site."

One dog exhibitor, who gave her name as Maureen, groomed her Shiba Inu in the shade along one of Valley's tree lined sidewalks. The small dog bore a strong resemblance to a fox in its features and coloration.

"The Shiba Inu is the national dog of Japan," said Maureen. "The breed is thousands of years old and is used in Japan to hunt small game."

The Shiba Inu competition began at 12 p.m. and Maureen readied herself and took her show persona. "I've been showing dogs for 40 years," said Maureen. "It's just a fun hobby. You get quality time with your dog. You make friends and you do something you love."

According to Billy Wheeler's Dog Show Poop blog (http://dogshowpoop.blogspot.com), "British import, the Lakeland Terrier, ‘Saredon For Your Eyes Only', was Dr Roger Pritchard's [Best In Show] BIS on Saturday and Weimaraner, ‘Wrigley,' who got her third all breed BIS this year on Sunday.
