Israel Gutierrez worked for the Valley Star student newspaper at Los Angeles Valley College for over a year first as a page designer, then as an online editor and in Spring 2010, Editor in chief while still carrying duties as multi-media and design producer and director.
As a page designer, Gutierrez was able to overhaul the design of the campus paper, refresh the look of the Valley Star and began the process of updating the online site towards the end of the Spring 2009 semester. At the start of the Fall 2009 semester and with taking on his new online editor position, Gutierrez had completed leading the transition and redesign of the Valley Star's identity and online site, lavalleystar.com.
Under his tenure and contributions the staff has grown by more than 5 positions while online the newspaper has added video production, podcasting, soundslides and the online virtual publication of the Valley Star paper.
In the spring of 2010 he was able to lead his team and staff to achieving the prestigious Pacesetter award given by the Journalism Association of Community Colleges, after 6 years of first receiving it, along with getting recognition for their online site and newspaper with the General Excellence awards.
Gutierrez has individually garnered honorable mentions for his first in-house advertising at the JACC 2009 State Convention, and won first place for the same entry on his second in-house advertising in the JACC 2009 SoCal Regional Conference. As of 2010 he has captured several more awards and recognition by the JACC 2010 State Convention such as, honorable mention for his third in-house advertising, first place for news judgement and layout, people's choice for news judgement and layout, honorable mention in his first magazine illustration spread, and fourth place for front page layout. And most recently by the JACC 2010 SoCal Regional Conference, honorable mention for front page layout and honorable mention and first place for inside page layout.
He also does graphic design on the side for the Valley Star when needed and is also available for freelance design and multimedia work.
Gutierrez hopes to transfer and study in journalism and expand as a designer.
