On a warm Saturday evening, more than 3,000 people, including cancer survivors and supporters; traveled to Woodland Hills to take part in the annual "Light the Night" walk.

Thanks to the efforts of Valley College Secretary of Academic Affairs Erline Ewing, and staff, Valley was able to donate more than $1,700 to help fight cancer and to support Valley Vice President Sandy Mayo, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in November of 2008. She began chemotherapy in January of 2009 and concluded treatment this past August.

Eldridge, who lost her father to Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 1999 explained why she decided to take part in the weekend's walk.

"We did everything we could to raise money, from bake sales to candy bars," she said, while seated on a lawn chair next to the Valley banner at the event.

"We actually were just going to donate, then we got a call from Laura Runsten (Campaign Director for Light the Walk), who said, we did so well in such a short amount of time we should put are own team together."

The two-mile walk began with a festival of food and live music featuring more than 30 sponsors, national and local, that supplied free massages, pizza and pasta.

Before the walk began, Jennifer Lownes the mother of a 4-year-old victim of leukemia wanted to send a message to anyone going through the battle of cancer and their family members.

"The only thing I can say is never give up, and cherish every moment with your child."

As the music concluded and the sun set, survivors and supporters alike began to prepared for their 2 mile walk, and what began as an extremely hot day, had turned into a rather cool crisp night. With the festivities behind them, the event seemed to take on a more somber tone, but one filled with purpose and grit. With a signal from an event coordinator, the sea of red shirts armed with red, gold and white glowing balloons that lit the night, began their march down the streets of determination and hope.
